Khalil al-Hayya has been officially appointed as the new head of the political bureau of the Palestinian Hamas movement.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the group announced this leadership change via its official Telegram channel.
The statement confirmed that the internal elections for the political bureau chief position were held in Gaza on July 18. Prior to this appointment, Khalil al-Hayya served as the head of the movement's diplomatic wing and was the primary official responsible for operations within the Gaza Strip.
It should be noted that the previous leader of Hamas, Yahya Sinwar, was killed during an Israeli military strike in the Gaza Strip in October 2024. Following his death, the movement was temporarily governed by a five-member collegial council led by Mohammed Darwish.
The appointment of al-Hayya marks a pivotal moment for Hamas as it navigates the ongoing geopolitical instability in the region. Analysts suggest that his background in diplomacy may signal a shift in how the organization manages its external relations and internal governance during the current conflict.
