The opening of the border with Turkey would provide Armenia with direct access to Turkish ports in the Mediterranean, according to Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan.
As reported by Operative Information Center-OMM, citing Armenpress, the President stated that Yerevan is actively working toward both the opening of borders and the establishment of full diplomatic relations with Ankara.
"We are doing everything possible to establish full-fledged economic and political relations with neighboring countries," Khachaturyan emphasized during a press briefing.
According to the Armenian President, infrastructure work at border crossing points with Turkey has been completed, and these facilities are technically prepared for operation. Khachaturyan noted that the normalization process is already yielding positive impacts on the Armenian business sector.
He highlighted that since early 2026, positive dynamics have been observed in economic relations between the two countries. "Currently, Armenian vehicles can carry out direct cargo transportation to Turkey. Furthermore, a specific trade code has been established for goods imported from Turkey. Previously, goods imported into Armenia were processed using Georgian customs codes, but now this is being handled directly," he explained.
The normalization of relations between Armenia and Turkey remains a significant factor in regional geopolitics. Historically, the border between the two nations has been closed since 1993 due to the conflict in the Garabagh region. Efforts to restore ties have gained momentum in recent years, with both sides engaging in diplomatic dialogue aimed at fostering stability and economic integration in the South Caucasus.
