Victory is essential for Azerbaijan's champion to secure a spot in the UEFA Champions League play-offs

Azerbaijan's Garabagh FK is set to play its final home match of the UEFA Champions League league phase today against a prominent German Bundesliga side. The opponent is a well-known team in European competitions that has faced Garabagh several times over the years, occasionally emerging victorious. Currently sitting 22nd in the tournament standings, a win is vital for the Azerbaijani side. A loss in this fixture would significantly diminish play-off prospects, especially with a challenging final away match against Liverpool on the horizon.

Sports journalist Mehman Suleymanov shared these insights in a statement to the Operative Information Center-OMM regarding the high-stakes encounter in Baku.

What factors will determine the outcome of the match?

“This game is of paramount importance for our team. While the opponent is strong and experienced, Garabagh is expected to play dominant football at home, seeking victory in the opponent's half. Weather conditions, the state of the pitch, and fan support could all play a role. Cold weather and the previous home loss to Ajax might affect attendance, but true fans must support the team until the end. Although Eintracht Frankfurt is under a UEFA sanction barring their fans from two away matches, a significant number of their supporters have reportedly arrived in Baku via the Budapest-Baku flight,” Suleymanov noted.

Given the tournament standings, does this game require a risky or cautious approach?

The expert noted that the density of the tournament table forces the team to pursue a win. “We need at least one victory in the final two matches; even one or two points may not suffice. Competition for play-off spots is intense, and positions shift after every round. Nevertheless, caution is necessary. Garabagh is typically the dominant side at home, and head coach Gurban Gurbanov rarely deviates from his football philosophy. The team will focus on the attack, but defensive vigilance is crucial against a German side with vast European experience, particularly regarding their dangerous set-pieces.”

Mehman Suleymanov also highlighted the recent coaching change within the German club:

“Dino Toppmöller has been dismissed, and a permanent head coach has not yet been appointed. The team is currently led by interim coaches, including Alexander Meier. Interestingly, Meier scored three goals against Garabagh in a 2013 match and knows our team well. Gurban Gurbanov has mentioned in press conferences that this coaching shift complicates tactical preparations, as it remains unclear if they will employ a new strategy.”

According to the expert, the injury to Kady is another significant factor:

“As a playmaker, Kady was instrumental. Montiel has been filling that role recently and showed good form during the Antalya training camp. The coaching staff will finalize this position before kickoff. Regardless of the opponent's strength, Garabagh will not sit back in defense. The team will strive for ball possession and look to break through the defense. This being the final home game, the standings demand an offensive effort.”

Garabagh FK, based in Baku, has become a consistent representative of Azerbaijan in European football, frequently reaching the group stages of major tournaments. The club's success is often attributed to the long-term stability under Gurban Gurbanov, who has been at the helm since 2008. This match represents a critical juncture in their European campaign as they aim to advance further in the revamped Champions League format.

Mehman Suleymanov concluded by emphasizing that this match is of vital importance for Garabagh's position and play-off aspirations, necessitating maximum effort for a victory.
