Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney arrived in Australia on March 3 for an official visit as part of his Asia-Pacific regional tour. According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, citing foreign media, the primary objective of the visit is to strengthen the strategic partnership between the two "middle powers" amid ongoing shifts in the global political system.

While both nations remain close allies of the United States, they aim to expand cooperation in the extraction of critical minerals, particularly as tensions rise in the Middle East. Prior to this visit, Carney traveled to Japan and India, where he signed new trade agreements and restored relations with New Delhi following a year of diplomatic friction. According to the Canadian Prime Minister's Office, the parties will discuss cooperation in defense, maritime security, critical minerals, trade, and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese characterized Canada as "one of our closest friends," emphasizing the importance of closer contact to protect national interests. Western nations are increasingly seeking to reduce dependence on China for critical minerals—essential components for semiconductors and the defense industry—and establish their own reserves. Australian Resources Minister Madeleine King noted that both Canada and Australia, as major producer nations, possess significant potential in this sector.

The concept of "middle power" diplomacy has gained renewed significance in the current geopolitical landscape. During his address at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Mark Carney highlighted the importance of collective action among such nations, stating: "Middle powers must act together, because if we are not at the table, we are on the menu." This visit underscores a growing trend where secondary global powers form strategic blocs to navigate the competition between major superpowers like the US and China.

In Sydney, Carney is expected to deliver a speech at the Lowy Institute think tank, focusing on changes in the global order and the opportunities these shifts create for countries like Canada and Australia. This diplomatic push aligns with broader efforts by the West to secure supply chains and maintain regional stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
