A massive, vegetation-covered mass has been observed drifting across Williston Lake in the British Columbia region of Canada. The phenomenon, initially captured by local resident Rocky Avery, sparked significant debate on social media, with many viewers initially questioning the authenticity of the footage.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the event has been verified as genuine through satellite analysis. Data from the European Space Agency's (ESA) Sentinel-2 satellite confirmed the object's movement. Investigations revealed that the green mass was drifting approximately 100 kilometers west of the W.A.C. Bennett Dam in July, and was sighted again near the Ospika River in late August.
Experts suggest that the object is not a true island, but rather a massive floating mat of vegetation. It is believed to be composed of an organic layer where root systems have become densely intertwined. Dam officials noted that water levels in the lake have reached their maximum capacity for the first time in 14 years, which likely caused the rising water to detach layers of soil and vegetation from the shoreline, pushing them into the reservoir.
While authorities have stated that the floating mass currently poses no direct threat to the hydroelectric power station, its unpredictable movement and absence from navigational charts present potential risks for boaters and anglers in the area. Williston Lake, created by the W.A.C. Bennett Dam in the late 1960s, remains one of the largest reservoirs in North America, serving as a critical component of British Columbia's power infrastructure.
