The Canadian government has brought new tariffs into force as of midnight in response to the 50% tariff imposed by US President Donald Trump on Canadian goods.

The new tariffs will apply to products imported from the United States with a total value of $20 billion.
The rates will range from 15% to 50%, depending on the product.
The measures mainly cover the steel, dairy, household appliance, agricultural equipment, paper and electronics sectors, which have been affected by US tariffs.
The Canadian government said US goods shipped before the new tariffs took effect would be exempt from the duties.
Trade talks between Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Trump failed to produce an agreement. Carney called conditions put forward by the United States at the last minute “unacceptable” and announced that Canada was withdrawing from the negotiations.
Carney said the US side wanted to restrict trade agreements Canada could conclude with other countries and was exerting pressure over Quebec’s language and cultural rights.
The United States, in turn, accused Canada of rejecting trade restrictions for political reasons. Tensions rose further after Trump threatened to block sales of aircraft produced by Canadian company Bombardier in the United States, as talks between the two countries were suspended.
Polls show that a large majority of Canadians support Carney’s firm stance, while only 20% of people in the United States support additional tariffs on Canada.
