Spain's Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares has announced that Spain will reopen its embassy in Tehran to facilitate diplomatic engagement in the region.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, Albares presented this move as part of broader efforts to achieve peace amid the ongoing conflict involving the United States and Israel. The Foreign Minister instructed the Spanish ambassador to return to Tehran immediately, resume official duties, and reopen the diplomatic mission.
Albares emphasized that the decision was made so that Spain could participate in peace efforts "from all sides, including from the Iranian capital itself." This diplomatic restoration is seen as a strategic move to maintain open channels of communication during a period of heightened regional tensions. Spain has historically maintained a balanced foreign policy in the Middle East, often acting as a mediator within the European Union framework.
The reopening of the embassy in Tehran follows a period of diplomatic recalibration among European nations regarding their presence in Iran. Such missions serve as vital hubs for monitoring regional security developments and facilitating humanitarian or political dialogue. By re-establishing a full diplomatic presence, Madrid aims to strengthen its influence in multilateral discussions aimed at de-escalating current geopolitical conflicts.
