The Iraqi-flagged supertanker "Agios Fanourios I" has successfully passed through the Strait of Hormuz and entered the Persian Gulf, heading toward the Iraqi port of Basra.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing Bloomberg and Interfax, that this vessel is the first oil tanker to navigate northwest through the strategic waterway since the United States Navy began its blockade. While US naval forces in the Gulf of Oman have been obstructing maritime traffic—previously forcing the sanctioned vessel "Rich Starry" to turn back—the "Agios Fanourios I" was permitted to pass as it was not bound for Iran and is not on the US sanctions blacklist.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most vital maritime chokepoints, through which approximately one-fifth of the world's total oil consumption passes daily. Tensions in the region have escalated recently following the implementation of naval restrictions by the administration of US President Donald Trump, aimed at monitoring and controlling energy exports from sanctioned entities. The successful transit of the Iraqi vessel highlights the complexities of navigating the current geopolitical landscape in the Middle East, where maritime security remains a primary concern for global energy markets and the stability of international trade routes.
