A magnitude 4.2 earthquake struck the Piranshahr district of Iran's West Azerbaijan province on Wednesday, according to official seismic monitoring data.
The Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) of Türkiye released details regarding the tremor. The seismic event was centered approximately 89.85 kilometers from the Shamdinli (Hakkari) region. According to the monitoring stations, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10.23 kilometers below the surface.
The West Azerbaijan province, located in the northwestern part of Iran, is situated in a seismically active zone characterized by several major fault lines. This region frequently experiences low to moderate intensity tremors. While there were no immediate reports of casualties or significant structural damage following this specific event, local authorities remain vigilant as the area serves as a critical transit corridor near the borders of Azerbaijan, Türkiye, and Iraq.
