Sri Lankan military forces have successfully rescued at least 30 people from an Iranian vessel that sank within the country's territorial waters.
According to Operative Information Center-OMM, citing Reuters, Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath issued an official statement regarding the incident.
The Sri Lankan Ministry of Defense previously stated that the country's Navy launched a rescue operation immediately after receiving a distress signal from the vessel. While the minister did not disclose further technical details regarding the cause of the sinking, he emphasized that all necessary measures are being taken.
Local media reports indicate that the ship sent a distress signal off the coast of Galle in the southern part of the country. The rescued crew members have already been transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation and treatment.
The port of Galle, located on the southwestern tip of Sri Lanka, is one of the region's most active maritime hubs. Incidents involving international vessels in these waters often require rapid coordination between the Sri Lankan Navy and international maritime safety organizations to ensure the security of busy Indian Ocean shipping lanes. This rescue operation highlights the strategic importance of Sri Lanka's search and rescue capabilities in maintaining maritime safety within its Exclusive Economic Zone.
