An Iranian reconnaissance unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) successfully completed its mission in international waters before being shot down by a US fighter jet. The Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing the Mehr news agency, that the drone was monitoring naval movements in the region.

According to official statements, the primary objective of these reconnaissance drones is the continuous monitoring of all military activities in areas adjacent to the Islamic Republic. The Shahed-129 UAV is designed to collect intelligence and transmit data in real-time. An informed source told the Tasnim agency that the drone was performing routine and legal surveillance, including reconnaissance and filming, within international maritime boundaries before the encounter with the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier group.

The Shahed-129 is a cornerstone of Iran's domestically produced drone fleet, capable of both combat and reconnaissance operations with a significant flight endurance. This incident underscores the ongoing maritime tensions in the Middle East, particularly in strategic waterways where international naval forces and regional military assets frequently operate in close proximity. Such encounters highlight the sensitive nature of regional security and the increasing role of unmanned systems in modern electronic warfare and intelligence gathering.
