Reports have emerged on social media regarding a drone strike allegedly carried out by Iran against the Nakhchivan International Airport.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, citing Musavat.com, several social media users and journalists have claimed that missiles or drones were fired at the airport in Nakhchivan. Journalist Heydar Oguz, among others, alleged that at least three strikes have hit the airport territory so far, asserting that the attacks are ongoing.
Images circulating on social media platforms appear to show damage inside the airport terminal, including shattered glass and collapsed ceiling structures. While significant material damage has been reported, there are currently no recorded casualties resulting from the incident. Furthermore, reports indicate that several flights heading to Nakhchivan were forced to turn back, and temporary flight restrictions have been implemented at the facility.
The incident occurs amid unconfirmed reports of missile fire from Iranian territory toward Turkey, which allegedly prompted a warning from Turkish official circles to Tehran. While Iranian authorities have denied claims regarding strikes toward Turkey, they have yet to issue a formal statement regarding the situation in Nakhchivan. Official bodies in Azerbaijan are expected to provide a detailed assessment as the situation develops.
Nakhchivan, an exclave of the Republic of Azerbaijan, holds strategic importance in the region, sharing borders with Armenia, Turkey, and Iran. The Nakhchivan International Airport serves as a vital transport hub for the region, which has been under a long-standing blockade by Armenia, making air travel the primary link between the exclave and the rest of Azerbaijan. Any military provocation in this area is viewed as a significant threat to regional stability and civil aviation safety.
