A powerful eruption of the Anak Krakatau volcano in Indonesia has caused significant disruptions to the country's air traffic, leading to widespread flight cancellations.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the rise of volcanic ash clouds into the upper atmosphere has raised serious concerns regarding flight safety, forcing aviation authorities to take immediate action.
Data from Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) indicates that the volcanic ash reached altitudes of 6,000 meters in the Java region and up to 15,000 meters over Sumatra. As a precautionary measure to ensure passenger safety, a total of 1,558 domestic and international flights have been canceled.
The suspension of air travel has left over 170,000 passengers stranded across eight major airports. Indonesian Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi stated that operations at several airports were temporarily halted after volcanic ash was observed spreading toward West Java.
Authorities are currently monitoring the situation closely, tracking the dispersion of the ash clouds. Decisions regarding the resumption of flights will be made based on the level of volcanic activity and when the airspace is deemed safe for aviation.
Anak Krakatau, which translates to "Child of Krakatau," is a volcanic island located in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Java and Sumatra. It emerged from the remnants of the legendary Krakatoa volcano, which famously erupted in 1883.
