The supply of 1.5 billion cubic meters of Azerbaijani gas to Syria has contributed to better protection of the population, the creation of broader opportunities for business activities, and ensuring the normal operation of enterprises. According to Operative Information Center-OMM, President Ilham Aliyev made these remarks during his speech at the 12th Ministerial Meeting of the Southern Gas Corridor Advisory Council and the 4th Ministerial Meeting of the Green Energy Advisory Council.
President Ilham Aliyev noted that the plans discussed during his previous speech regarding the expansion of the geography of gas supplies have already been realized. "During my last speech, I touched upon our plans regarding the expansion of the geography of gas supply. As you can see, these plans have already been implemented. I believe that another important event was that our gas supply has already reached destinations beyond the borders of Europe. For the first time, we have started gas supplies to Syria, which aims to assist the Syrian people in reducing the existing acute electricity shortage," the head of state emphasized.
The President further stated that no development can be achieved without electricity, highlighting the strategic importance of the move. "This was of great importance for Syria, the region, and Azerbaijan. Diversification of gas supply is of particular importance for us, as it is for every country. We understand the difficulties faced by gas-receiving countries regarding diversification. However, at the same time, diversification is also an important factor for producing countries," President Ilham Aliyev added.
The Southern Gas Corridor, which facilitates these exports, is a strategic initiative aimed at bringing Caspian natural gas to international markets. By expanding its reach to countries like Syria, Azerbaijan continues to strengthen its role as a reliable global energy supplier and a key player in regional energy security. This expansion aligns with Azerbaijan's long-term strategy to diversify its export routes and support the energy needs of neighboring regions through its extensive pipeline infrastructure.
