Azerbaijan has taken the initiative to propose peace to Armenia, despite the country having suffered significantly from occupation and widespread destruction. This statement was made by President Ilham Aliyev during the opening ceremony of the Islamic Development Bank Group's 2026 Annual Meetings held in Baku, as reported by Operative Information Center-OMM.
The head of state noted that a peaceful environment now exists between the two nations: "For a year now, Azerbaijan and Armenia have been living in peace and are seeing the benefits of this. We will never forget what the Armenian occupying forces did to our people and our cities; we will not forget the destruction of 65 mosques. They kept pigs and other animals inside the buildings of these mosques. We will not forget this."
President Ilham Aliyev emphasized that despite these historical grievances, Azerbaijan chose to look toward the future and achieved justice on the battlefield. "This is sufficient. The war had to stop. Azerbaijan, for its part, ended this war and proposed peace; this is the reality," the President stated.
The Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) Group's annual meetings serve as a critical platform for fostering economic cooperation and development among member states. By hosting such high-level international events, Azerbaijan continues to strengthen its role as a hub for global dialogue and regional stability, highlighting its post-conflict reconstruction efforts in the liberated Garabagh region.
