Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, during his official visit to Tokyo, held a meeting with his Japanese counterpart, Toshimitsu Motegi.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of Azerbaijan shared details of the meeting on its official "X" account.
"The visit demonstrates the intention of both countries to deepen bilateral relations and expand cooperation in areas of mutual interest," the statement noted.
The MFA reported that the ministers discussed the current state and development prospects of bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Japan. Key topics included the expansion of political dialogue, as well as cooperation in economy, trade, investment, energy, transport, digital transformation, innovation, education, tourism, sports, and climate change mitigation.
The ministers highlighted that 2027 will mark the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and Japan. They expressed satisfaction with the successful development of cooperation based on mutual respect, trust, and friendship over the past period, noting that this milestone offers further opportunities to deepen ties.
The meeting also addressed the expansion of economic cooperation. Both sides praised the activities of the Azerbaijan-Japan Joint Economic Commission and the results of the 12th meeting held in September 2025. The ministers emphasized the importance of finalizing the Azerbaijan-Japan Investment Agreement in the near future.
Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov informed his counterpart about the visa-free regime initiative planned by Azerbaijan for Japanese citizens, noting that this step will contribute to people-to-people contacts, tourism, and business relations.
Highlighting Azerbaijan's growing role as an international transport and logistics hub, Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov underscored the significance of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route for strengthening regional and global connectivity. The active participation of the Silkway company in the Japanese market for over a decade was noted with satisfaction. Furthermore, the discussion covered Azerbaijan's robust infrastructure, including nine international airports, commercial ports, the largest commercial fleet in the Caspian basin, and the Alat Free Economic Zone, which offer vast opportunities for expanded cooperation.
The parties emphasized the importance of long-term cooperation in energy security, acknowledging Azerbaijan's vital role in ensuring global energy stability. Successful examples of collaboration within the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli field and the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline were highly commended.
The meeting also touched upon student exchange programs, the teaching of the Japanese language at two universities in Azerbaijan, and cultural and humanitarian events. The hosting of the World Sumo Championship in Baku this October was also noted with satisfaction.
During the meeting, Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov provided detailed information on the post-conflict situation in the region, restoration and reconstruction efforts in the liberated territories, and the normalization process between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
The sides exchanged views on regional and international security issues, including the situations in the Middle East and Ukraine, as well as multilateral cooperation, climate action, sustainable development, and interaction within international organizations. The importance of respecting the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, including the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of states, was emphasized.
The meeting concluded with a discussion on other bilateral and regional issues of mutual interest.
