A French-registered light surveillance aircraft has been conducting flights along the border between Romania and Ukraine.

According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, citing reports from international media, the aircraft is currently active in the region.

The aircraft, identified as a Vulcanair P.68 Observer 2, has been observed flying at an altitude of approximately 1.5 kilometers. Its flight path covers nearly the entire length of the border line, raising questions regarding the nature of the mission.

While this specific model is typically utilized for light transport and training purposes, the twin-turboprop aircraft is also equipped with capabilities suitable for observation and reconnaissance tasks.

The aircraft departed from the airport in Cluj-Napoca, located in northwestern Romania, before heading toward the Ukrainian border, where it has continued its flight pattern. Sources indicate that this is the first time such an aircraft has been recorded following this specific route along the border region.

This incident follows previous reports of aerial activity in the area. Notably, a Bombardier Challenger 650 Artemis II, a sophisticated reconnaissance and target acquisition aircraft, was previously observed operating near the Black Sea section of the Romania-Ukraine border. That aircraft had departed from a military airfield in Constanta, Romania, to conduct patrols over the neutral waters of the Black Sea.

The presence of such aircraft in the vicinity of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine highlights the heightened state of aerial monitoring and intelligence gathering currently being conducted by various international actors in the region.
