US President Donald Trump has indicated that Washington may reconsider its current position regarding the United Kingdom’s sovereignty over the Falkland Islands.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, this development follows reports suggesting that Washington might adjust its policy on the islands to encourage London to increase its defense spending.
A senior US official stated that the Pentagon is reviewing NATO allies' defense spending commitments, with the United Kingdom receiving particular focus. Officials presented the potential shift in Washington's stance on British sovereignty over the Falklands as one of several options to incentivize London to boost its military budget.
UK Defense Secretary John Healey has expressed support for plans to increase defense spending to 3 percent of GDP, noting that a final decision will be announced following an assessment in the spring. Regarding the US stance, Healey stated he was unaware of claims that Washington might support Argentina’s position on the islands.
“The Falkland Islands belong to Britain. They will remain British as long as the islanders want them to be,” Healey emphasized.
The Falkland Islands, located in the South Atlantic, have been the subject of a long-standing sovereignty dispute between the United Kingdom and Argentina. The tension culminated in a 1982 war between the two nations, which resulted in the United Kingdom maintaining control over the territory. The islands remain a British Overseas Territory, and their status continues to be a sensitive diplomatic issue.
