European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has held high-level discussions with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and key European leaders regarding the current situation in Greenland.
The Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing foreign media outlets, that the meeting included French President Emmanuel Macron, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
"Together, we stand firm in our commitment to support the sovereignty of Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark. We will always protect our strategic economic and security interests. We are unwavering in our shared obligation to safeguard the sovereignty of Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark. We will face these challenges to our European solidarity with determination," von der Leyen stated.
The discussions come amid increasing geopolitical attention toward the Arctic region, which has become a focal point for global powers due to its vast natural resources and strategic maritime routes. Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, holds significant importance for transatlantic security and the stability of the North Atlantic. European leaders have recently intensified efforts to ensure that the region remains a zone of cooperation while reinforcing defense mechanisms against potential external pressures.
