European Union member states will discuss potential measures the European side can take to ensure the Strait of Hormuz remains open for international navigation.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports that Kaja Kallas, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, made this statement to journalists in Brussels.

Speaking ahead of a meeting of EU foreign ministers, Kallas emphasized that keeping the Strait of Hormuz open is of vital importance for Europe. She noted that the European side is currently evaluating specific steps to maintain the stability and accessibility of this critical maritime corridor.

The discussions follow a recent intervention by US President Donald Trump. On March 16, US President Donald Trump posted on his social media account, calling on all countries that purchase oil through the Strait of Hormuz to take active steps to ensure the restoration and security of oil transportation from the region.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most strategically important chokepoints, serving as the primary transit route for approximately one-fifth of the world's total oil consumption. Located between Oman and Iran, it connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. Any disruption to traffic through the strait significantly impacts global energy markets and international maritime security, making it a focal point of geopolitical stability for both the European Union and the United States.
