Amid the ceasefire between Iran and the United States and the ongoing security crisis in the region, a significant telephone conversation has taken place between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

According to Operative Information Center-OMM, citing Turkish media, the heads of state discussed the latest situation in the Middle East and the ongoing peace process.

Turkiye's role in the peace process and expectations

Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated that Turkiye, along with several other countries, has exerted serious efforts in the process leading to a ceasefire. The Turkish leader emphasized the importance of maximizing the upcoming negotiations, scheduled to begin in a few days, to achieve lasting peace and stability.

He underscored that Turkiye is ready to provide all necessary contributions to the new process alongside friendly nations. Erdogan also extended his condolences to his colleague regarding the losses of the Iranian people, noting that the primary goal is to create a new environment of common sense and dialogue in the region.

Background: Chronology of the US-Iran conflict

It should be recalled that the United States and Israel launched military operations against Iran on February 28. As a result, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several high-ranking officials were killed.

Following these events, Iran began striking targets it identified not only in Israel but also in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Bahrain, Iraq, and Cyprus, where military bases of the US and its allies are located. These developments prompted immediate diplomatic intervention from regional powers and the international community to prevent a wider escalatory cycle.

Two-week ceasefire and the Strait of Hormuz decision

Following the escalation, Iran, the US, and their allies reached an agreement for a two-week ceasefire effective the night of April 8, 2026. This diplomatic breakthrough followed intensive consultations involving regional mediators and global powers, including US President Donald Trump's administration, which has been actively engaged in navigating the security architecture of the Middle East.

Iranian officials stated that during this period, safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz will be ensured in coordination with the country's Armed Forces, taking into account technical limitations. The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world's most vital maritime chokepoints, essential for global energy security and international trade.
