The Ebola virus outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has reached a critical stage, with the number of confirmed cases rising to 6,186 and the death toll surpassing 3,000, according to official reports.

The Operative Information Center-OMM reports that, based on data provided by the DRC government as of August 31, the epidemic—which was officially declared in May—has created a severe epidemiological situation across the country. Health officials have stated that the mortality rate currently stands at 48.6 percent.

On a positive note, 1,409 individuals have successfully recovered and been discharged from hospitals. Currently, 830 patients remain under medical care and quarantine in specialized treatment centers.

The virus has spread across 60 health zones located in the Ituri, North Kivu, Haut-Uele, Tshopo, South Kivu, and Bas-Uele provinces. Experts characterize the outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo strain, as the most extensive and lethal Ebola crisis in the history of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

This ongoing health crisis is considered one of the largest Ebola outbreaks recorded globally since the devastating epidemic that struck West Africa between 2014 and 2016, which claimed thousands of lives and prompted significant international intervention.
