The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has approved a major project to modernize the water and sewage infrastructure in the city of Sheki and its surrounding villages. Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the decision was finalized by the Bank on April 29. The total cost of the initiative is estimated at 95 million euros, with up to 91 million euros to be financed through a credit line.
The scope of the project includes the construction of drinking water supply systems, sewage networks, and rainwater management facilities. Additionally, the funds will support the building of modern wastewater treatment plants. The primary objectives are to ensure an uninterrupted supply of clean water to the local population, improve wastewater management efficiency, and create a resilient infrastructure capable of mitigating flood risks in the region.
This initiative aligns with the broader strategy of the government of Azerbaijan to modernize regional infrastructure and improve living standards across the country. The EBRD has been a long-standing partner for Azerbaijan, investing billions of euros in various sectors, including energy, transport, and municipal services. By upgrading the water systems in Sheki—a city of significant historical and touristic importance—the project not only addresses environmental concerns but also supports the sustainable development of the local economy and tourism sector.
