The European Union has announced that the Ebola outbreak currently spreading in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda poses a very low risk to EU citizens.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the European Commission is closely monitoring the epidemiological situation in Africa following reports from international media outlets regarding the spread of the virus.

European Commission spokesperson Eva Hrncirova stated that the EU is tracking developments in real-time and is prepared to take rapid action if necessary.

“According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, the risk of infection in the EU is currently very low, even for individuals traveling to the affected regions,”
she noted.

Hrncirova added that there are currently no indicators requiring measures beyond standard public health protocols in Europe:

“We know that diseases do not recognize borders. This is also true for Ebola. Therefore, we believe that coordination and cooperation with the World Health Organization and other international partners are extremely important.”

According to health officials, the current outbreak is caused by the "Bundibugyo" variant, a rare strain of the Ebola virus. Unlike more common strains, the Bundibugyo variant currently has no confirmed treatment or approved vaccine, making containment at the source a priority for global health organizations.

Ebola virus disease is a severe, often fatal illness in humans, characterized by high fever and internal bleeding. The European Union frequently provides financial and medical assistance to African nations to combat such outbreaks, aiming to stabilize the health situation locally and prevent the cross-border transmission of infectious diseases into the European continent.
