The upcoming World Cup has been overshadowed by an unexpected crisis stemming from strict migration and visa regulations imposed by the US government.

According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, Omar Abdulkadir Artan, a Somali referee appointed to the tournament and recognized as the 2025 Men's Referee of the Year by the Confederation of African Football, was denied entry into the US.

US officials justified the decision citing "security screening concerns." Meanwhile, FIFA officials emphasized that visa decisions remain the sole prerogative of the host nation. Despite the setback, Artan expressed understanding regarding the situation and wished his colleagues success in the tournament.

Visa complications extend beyond match officials.

Enhanced security measures have been applied to the Irish national team, while numerous Scottish fans have had their travel authorizations revoked at the last minute. Former England international footballer Ian Wright has described the chaotic situation as the "World Cup of Chaos."

Furthermore, the Iranian Football Federation announced that ticket quotas were canceled just one week before the tournament's opening. This decision has left thousands of Iranian fans, who had planned their travel based on official procedures, in a difficult position.

The World Cup is widely regarded as the pinnacle of international football, historically serving as a platform for global unity and cultural exchange. However, the current administrative challenges underscore the complexities involved in hosting major sporting events in an era of heightened border security and evolving international travel policies.
