US President Donald Trump has expressed his support for the Iranian national team's participation in the FIFA World Cup.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the President addressed the matter during a press briefing following a signing ceremony in the Oval Office. When asked to comment on FIFA President Gianni Infantino's statements regarding Iran's inclusion in the upcoming tournament, President Trump signaled his approval of the decision.
"If Gianni said so, I have no problem with it. Let them play,"
the President stated, emphasizing a focus on the sporting aspect of the global competition. The FIFA World Cup is widely regarded as the world's premier football tournament, frequently serving as a venue where international relations and sports intersect. Historically, matches between the United States and Iran, such as those in 1998 and 2022, have been highlighted as moments of symbolic sportsmanship. The President's remarks align with the general principle of maintaining the integrity of international sports competitions regardless of geopolitical complexities.
