The Main Drug Enforcement Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) has conducted a special operation in Baku, resulting in the detention of Fuad Hasanov, a previously convicted individual, for large-scale drug trafficking.
According to official information provided by the MIA to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the suspect was previously imprisoned for the sale of potent psychotropic substances. During the latest operational measures, law enforcement officers inspected the vehicle driven by Hasanov and a secret storage location in the capital. They discovered and seized 51 kilograms 555 grams of marijuana enriched with psychotropic substances, along with 2,999 methadone pills.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect was acting as a courier under the instructions of an Iranian citizen. Hasanov reportedly planned to distribute the narcotics at various designated locations across the city. A criminal case has been initiated regarding the fact, and a court order has placed the individual under pretrial detention. Investigations are currently ongoing to identify other members of the drug trafficking network.
Drug trafficking remains a significant challenge for law enforcement agencies in Azerbaijan, particularly concerning the transit of narcotics along the "Balkan route" and other illegal corridors. The Ministry of Internal Affairs and the State Security Service continuously strengthen border security and domestic surveillance to prevent the influx of illegal substances from neighboring regions. This operation is part of Azerbaijan's broader national strategy to combat organized crime and protect public health from the impact of synthetic and organic narcotics.
