The death toll from an attack on a girls' school in Iran's southern Hormozgan province has risen sharply to 148, according to official reports.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing the Mizan news agency, that local authorities confirmed the updated figures following the devastating incident.
In addition to the fatalities, at least 95 schoolgirls sustained various degrees of injuries during the attack. The incident, which occurred on February 28, targeted the Shajare Tayebe school. Esmaeil Baghaei, a spokesperson for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, previously stated that the final death toll could potentially reach 160 as search and rescue operations continue and critically injured victims remain in hospitals.
Hormozgan province, where the attack took place, is a strategically significant region located along the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. Such incidents in educational institutions often draw widespread international condemnation due to the targeting of civilians and children. Security in the region has been a point of concern for local authorities, and investigations are currently underway to determine the full circumstances and perpetrators behind the bombardment.
