The United States and Italy are set to launch the "Flintlock 2026" military exercises this week, involving more than 30 nations under the leadership of the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM).
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the U.S. Africa Command released a joint statement regarding the commencement of the maneuvers. The statement noted that for the first time, the exercises will be held on Libyan territory, with the official opening ceremony scheduled to take place in the city of Sirte.
According to the official report, the drills will primarily feature African partner nations, with Ivory Coast also serving as one of the host countries. The exercises are designed to enhance the combat readiness of participating forces through various scenarios encompassing air, land, and sea operations. The statement emphasized that "Flintlock" aims to contribute to the development of a unified Libyan military and the long-term security and stability of the country.
Flintlock is the U.S. Africa Command’s premier and largest annual special operations exercise, conducted since 2005 to strengthen the ability of key partner nations in the region to counter violent extremist organizations and protect their borders. By fostering collaboration between African, European, and North American forces, the program seeks to improve interoperability and collective response capabilities against transnational security threats in the Sahel and broader African continent.
