UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has strongly condemned the massive Israeli airstrikes against Lebanon on April 8, which resulted in significant casualties.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the strikes led to the deaths and injuries of hundreds of civilians, including children, while causing extensive damage to civilian infrastructure. The statement was issued by Stephane Dujarric, the spokesperson for the Secretary-General.
“The Secretary-General strongly condemns the loss of civilian lives and is deeply concerned by the rising number of casualties among the civilian population. He expresses his deepest condolences to the government and people of Lebanon and wishes a speedy and full recovery to the injured,” Dujarric stated.
The official statement published on the UN website noted that despite the announced ceasefire efforts involving international mediators, the ongoing military operations in Lebanon pose a serious threat to regional stability and the pursuit of a comprehensive peace. Guterres called for an immediate cessation of all military actions to prevent further escalation.
“International law, including international humanitarian law, must be respected at all times. Civilians and civilian objects must be protected, and attacks against them are unacceptable. There is no military solution to this conflict,” the statement added.
The escalation comes amid a period of heightened regional tension in the Middle East. The United Nations has consistently advocated for diplomatic resolutions to cross-border hostilities, emphasizing that prolonged conflict undermines humanitarian efforts and regional security. Lebanon has faced increasing socio-economic challenges, and the intensification of military strikes further complicates the delivery of essential services and aid to affected populations in the country.
