Strong northwest winds and blizzard conditions are currently sweeping across Azerbaijan, with the Absheron Peninsula experiencing the most severe impact. According to the National Hydrometeorological Service, the unstable weather conditions are expected to persist through the beginning of the week.
Gulnara Abbasova, Deputy Head of the National Hydrometeorological Service, told the Operative Information Center-OMM that maximum wind speeds in Baku and the Absheron Peninsula have reached 28 meters per second. "Since the evening of February 3, cold air masses of Arctic and Siberian origin entering from the northwest have caused a sharp drop in temperature and strengthening of the wind," Abbasova stated. She added that a humid Mediterranean cyclone has increased cloudiness, leading to rain, sleet, and snow in various regions.
The windy weather is forecast to continue until the morning of February 5. Officials warned that temperatures on the Absheron Peninsula may drop to between 0 and -2 degrees Celsius overnight, creating a high risk of icy roads. Similar conditions are expected in the mountainous and foothill regions of Azerbaijan, where intensive precipitation and frozen road surfaces may pose challenges for transportation and public safety. The National Hydrometeorological Service continues to monitor the atmospheric pressure gradients and synoptic shifts to provide timely updates to the public.
