Azerbaijan and Germany are set to deepen their cooperation in the field of humanitarian mine clearance, marking a significant step in bilateral relations. This commitment was formalized as part of a broader framework for cooperation between the two nations.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, this initiative was highlighted in the Joint Declaration on a Strategic Agenda for Bilateral Partnership, signed between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Federal Republic of Germany in Berlin on July 21.
The declaration outlines a comprehensive approach to security, noting that dialogue at the ministerial level will continue regarding regional and global security issues, including efforts to combat human trafficking and the illicit drug trade. Furthermore, the agreement emphasizes the promotion of cooperation in the defense industry, as well as the continuation of student and expert exchanges between defense academies and institutions. Both nations have committed to the exchange of information and best practices in areas of mutual concern.
The issue of landmines remains a critical challenge for Azerbaijan, particularly in the territories liberated from occupation. Following the 44-day Patriotic War in 2020, the presence of vast minefields has hindered reconstruction efforts and the safe return of internally displaced persons to their homes. International partnerships, such as this agreement with Germany, are vital for accelerating demining operations, which are essential for ensuring the safety of civilians and facilitating the large-scale restoration of infrastructure in the Garabagh and East Zangezur economic regions.
