Epidemik parotit: Azərbaycanda epidemioloji vəziyyət sabitdir

The epidemiological situation regarding epidemic parotitis, commonly known as mumps, remains stable in Azerbaijan, according to the Ministry of Health.

The Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the Ministry issued an official statement in response to recent social media posts alleging a widespread outbreak of the disease in Baku. Health officials clarified that these claims do not reflect the current epidemiological reality. At present, the situation is under control, with only sporadic cases recorded. No epidemic or mass transmission of the virus has been detected in the country.

"The current situation is being continuously monitored by relevant medical institutions, and necessary preventive and anti-epidemic measures are being consistently implemented," the Ministry stated.

Epidemic parotitis is primarily observed among individuals who have not been vaccinated or have received incomplete vaccination. The virus is mainly transmitted through respiratory droplets—via coughing, sneezing, or close contact. The incubation period typically lasts between 11 and 23 days. Key symptoms include fever, swelling and pain in the parotid salivary glands, discomfort during chewing and swallowing, general malaise, headaches, and loss of appetite.

In most cases, mumps is a mild illness that resolves with full recovery. However, complications can rarely occur in unvaccinated adolescents and adults. Consequently, timely vaccination remains the most effective method for preventing the spread of the disease and protecting public health.
