Azerbaijan expects to launch the full-scale development phase of the "Absheron" gas-condensate field within the next two to three years, significantly boosting the country's export potential.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that President Ilham Aliyev made these remarks during his speech at the 12th Ministerial Meeting of the Southern Gas Corridor Advisory Council and the 4th Ministerial Meeting of the Green Energy Advisory Council held in Baku.
The head of state noted that production from the deep gas layers of the "Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli" (ACG) field is also expected to commence this year. "Production was expected to start last year, but it did not happen. However, we are confident that production will begin specifically in the current year," President Ilham Aliyev stated. He further added, "We expect the start of the full-scale development phase of the 'Absheron' field within two to three years, which will increase gas production from 'Absheron' threefold. At the same time, gas production is expected to begin under the second phase of the 'Umid' field."
The "Absheron" field, located in the Caspian Sea, is a critical component of Azerbaijan's strategy to remain a reliable energy supplier to Europe. The first phase of its development began in July 2023, providing an initial production capacity of 1.5 billion cubic meters per year. The transition to full-scale development is part of a broader initiative to expand the Southern Gas Corridor, a multi-billion dollar project that transports Azerbaijani gas to international markets, ensuring energy security for the region and beyond.
