Azerbaijan celebrates Ilakhir Charshenba today, the final Tuesday before the Novruz holiday, symbolizing the awakening of the earth and the renewal of life.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports that Ilakhir Charshenba, also known as Earth Tuesday, follows the previous celebrations of Water, Fire, and Wind Tuesdays. According to ancient folk beliefs, it is on this final Tuesday that the ground awakens and the earth begins to breathe, signaling the definitive end of winter.

In many regions of Azerbaijan, Ilakhir Charshenba is celebrated with as much solemnity and grandeur as the Novruz holiday itself. Traditional rituals include lighting bonfires in courtyards, where people jump over the flames to symbolize the purification of the soul and the leaving behind of the previous year's hardships. Families gather to decorate the "khoncha" (holiday tray) and prepare festive tables filled with traditional sweets and symbols of spring.

The festive khoncha typically features Novruz attributes such as "samani" (sprouted wheat), pakhlava, shekerbura, goghal, and dyed eggs. These are accompanied by various nuts, dried fruits, and candles, each representing light and warmth for the coming year. In Azerbaijan, these traditions serve as a vital link to the nation's cultural heritage, fostering a sense of unity and renewal across the country.

Novruz, which marks the arrival of the astronomical spring and the Persian New Year, is one of the most cherished holidays in Azerbaijan. It was officially inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009, recognizing its importance in promoting values of peace, solidarity, and reconciliation.
