Apple has updated its map application in the United States to rename Lake Ontario as "American Lake."

According to Operative Information Center-OMM, international media outlets have reported on the development. In an official statement, the company clarified that the name change will only be visible to users within the United States, while users in Canada will continue to see the body of water labeled as "Lake Ontario." For international users, both names are currently displayed simultaneously.

Similarly, Google has updated its "Google Maps" service to reflect the "American Lake" designation for users in the United States, while maintaining the traditional name for Canadian users.

Lake Ontario, one of the five Great Lakes of North America, is situated on the border between the U.S. state of New York and the Canadian province of Ontario. The lake is a significant geographical and economic feature for both nations, serving as a vital waterway for shipping and a source of hydroelectric power. The recent administrative change follows a decree signed by US President Donald Trump on August 27, amidst escalating trade tensions between the United States and Canada.
