European Council President Antonio Costa has called for urgent diplomatic efforts to resolve the escalating crisis in the Strait of Hormuz.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that Costa emphasized the necessity of de-escalation, according to EFE.
Antonio Costa stated that "diplomacy is the only way to prevent hostilities in the Strait of Hormuz and ensure freedom of navigation." He noted that the ongoing conflict has posed a serious threat to the international legal order and led to a sharp increase in energy prices within the European Union. According to the President, the situation also presents significant risks to European security in terms of migration and potential terrorist threats.
He further added that the United States and Israel decided to strike Iran without prior consultation with their allies. Costa emphasized that this conflict poses a grave threat to stability across the entire Middle East. The European Council President urged all parties to exercise restraint, cease military operations, and prioritize diplomatic channels. He noted that such an approach is essential to restoring the freedom of navigation and trade through the vital maritime corridor.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most strategically important chokepoints, through which approximately 20% of the world's total oil supply passes. Amid recent US-Israel strikes and Iran's retaliatory measures, shipping through the strait has effectively come to a standstill, triggering volatility in global energy markets. The European Union remains particularly sensitive to these disruptions, as the region relies heavily on stable maritime trade routes for its energy security and economic stability.
