Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing the Mehr news agency, that the announcement was made by Ali Larijani, the Secretary of Iran's National Security Council. The move comes following the death of Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei during military strikes conducted by the United States and Israel.
The regional situation escalated significantly on February 28, when the United States and Israel launched a joint military operation against Iran, conducting airstrikes across several cities in the republic. In response, Iranian forces launched missile strikes toward Israeli territory and targeted fourteen US military bases located across the Persian Gulf region. The selection of a Supreme Leader in Iran is traditionally the responsibility of the Assembly of Experts, a deliberative body of Islamic theologians.
