Prime Minister Ali Asadov of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Vice President of Türkiye Cevdet Yilmaz held a telephone conversation to discuss the recent drone attacks launched by Iran and the current security situation in the region.
The Cabinet of Ministers reported that the discussion focused on the grave implications of the strikes conducted by Iran against Azerbaijan on March 5. According to Operative Information Center-OMM, both officials expressed sharp condemnation of the aggression, emphasizing that such actions constitute a blatant violation of the norms and principles of international law.
Ali Asadov detailed that the strikes targeted Nakhchivan International Airport, a local school, and other civilian infrastructure. The attack resulted in injuries to several civilians and caused significant damage to the airport's terminal building. In response to the security threat, the Prime Minister expressed gratitude to Türkiye for its swift support in facilitating flights to Nakhchivan via Igdir airport to ensure passenger safety.
The conversation also highlighted the unwavering brotherhood between the two nations. It was noted that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s immediate call to President Ilham Aliyev following the incident serves as a clear manifestation of the solidarity between Baku and Ankara. This strategic cooperation is rooted in the Shusha Declaration, which formalizes the military and political alliance between the two Turkic states, ensuring mutual assistance in the face of external threats.
The Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, an exclave of Azerbaijan, has faced increased geopolitical pressure due to its strategic location bordering Iran, Armenia, and Türkiye. This latest escalation comes amid heightened regional tensions, underscoring the importance of the Zangezur corridor and the security of Azerbaijan's sovereign territories. Both parties concluded the call by reviewing urgent bilateral matters arising from the current regional dynamics.
