Azerbaijan Railways CJSC (ADY) has announced the commencement of extensive capital repair and reconstruction work on the Yevlax–Barda railway line.

According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, ADY is continuing large-scale renovation of the national railway infrastructure to ensure traffic safety and the reliable transportation of passengers and freight. As part of the reconstruction project, train services on the Baku–Aghdam–Baku route will be temporarily suspended. The final trips on this route are scheduled for May 9 and 10, after which work will begin to bring the aging infrastructure up to modern international standards.

The Yevlax–Barda line has not undergone major repairs since 1967. Currently, the nearly 60-year-old infrastructure limits train speeds to between 10 and 60 km/h. Upon completion of the modernization, travel times will be significantly reduced and safety measures along the tracks passing through residential areas will be strengthened. This project is a critical component of Azerbaijan's broader strategy to integrate the liberated territories into the national transport network. On May 10, 2025, President Ilham Aliyev inaugurated the Aghdam Railway and Bus Station Complex, and regular passenger services to the Garabagh region were restored in August of the same year. Demand for the Baku–Aghdam route has grown rapidly, with nearly 4,000 passengers traveling the line in the first quarter of this year alone.

The reconstruction of the Yevlax–Barda section will facilitate a modern railway link extending from Yevlax to Khankendi. Simultaneously, ADY is fast-tracking the construction of the Aghdam–Khankendi railway line and the Khankendi Railway and Bus Station Complex, the foundation of which was laid by President Ilham Aliyev in July last year. Once these projects are completed, direct rail services from Baku to Khankendi will be fully restored, marking a significant milestone in the socio-economic development and reintegration of the region.
