US bans imports of Canadian dairy products, alcohol and motorcycles

Washington has announced new restrictions in response to Ottawa’s retaliatory tariffs on US goods. The bans and higher import duties will take effect on Sept. 29.

The United States is imposing new trade restrictions on Canadian products. Under the decision, imports of certain alcoholic beverages, dairy products and motorcycles, including mopeds, will be banned.

US President Donald Trump accused Canada of discriminating against US companies in a series of executive orders signed on Sept. 8. The new import restrictions will take effect on Sept. 29.

The banned products include whey, cane molasses, non-alcoholic beer, various wines and spirits, malt beer and motorcycles.

Higher import duties will be imposed on other Canadian products. These include various types of cheese, raw hides and skins, paper, certain furniture and mattresses, metals such as aluminum and iron, motorboats, golf carts, fishing equipment and electrical distribution boards.

The US decision followed Canada’s imposition of retaliatory tariffs on approximately $27.6 billion worth of US goods. The tariffs, which took effect Tuesday, range from 15% to 50% and cover the steel and aluminum, dairy, household appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, plastics and electronics sectors.

In a video address, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said efforts to reduce the country’s dependence on the United States, its largest trading partner, would “come at a cost.”

The United States and Canada remain major trading partners. However, trade talks have stalled since negotiations broke down in August. Although both sides have said they want to reach an agreement, no date has been set for new negotiations.

The latest measures follow Washington’s decision to impose 50% tariffs worth billions of dollars on Canadian goods. The move has increased pressure on a range of sectors, including furniture and wine.
