Major wildfires burning near the city of Spokane in the U.S. state of Washington have been partially contained by firefighting crews, according to reports. Emergency responders are currently reinforcing containment lines in anticipation of upcoming hot and dry weather conditions.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the fires, which began on Saturday, have destroyed at least 700 homes and other structures. Tens of thousands of residents were evacuated to safety. The three major fire fronts on the northern outskirts of Spokane have scorched over 10,000 acres of land. Efforts are currently focused on extinguishing remaining hotspots and mitigating risks near residential areas.
At the height of the emergency, evacuation orders were issued for approximately 64,000 people. Preliminary assessments indicate that more than 700 buildings have been destroyed, with an additional 400 sustaining significant damage. No fatalities have been reported, and all 14 individuals previously listed as missing have been located safely.
Law enforcement authorities have detained one local resident on suspicion of arson in connection with one of the fires. Investigations into the causes of the other two blazes are ongoing. Officials have confirmed that the fires were not caused by lightning strikes.
It is worth noting that according to the National Interagency Fire Center, there are currently 94 large wildfires active across 13 U.S. states. Experts attribute the severity of the situation to long-term drought, extreme heat, and the broader impacts of climate change, which have increasingly fueled wildfire seasons across North America in recent years.
