The United States Navy's 6th Fleet has announced the arrival of an Ohio-class strategic nuclear submarine, equipped with intercontinental ballistic missiles, at the Port of Gibraltar.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports that a statement issued by the fleet emphasized that this visit demonstrates the military capabilities, flexibility, and unwavering commitment of the United States to its NATO allies.

According to official reports, the submarine entered Gibraltar on May 10. The statement further highlighted that ballistic missiles launched from Ohio-class submarines constitute one of the most critical components of the U.S. nuclear triad, ensuring a robust strategic deterrence power. The U.S. Navy operates 14 Ohio-class submarines, each capable of carrying up to 20 Trident II D-5 missiles.

This deployment comes at a time of heightened strategic importance for the Euro-Atlantic region. Under the administration of US President Donald Trump, the United States has continued to prioritize the modernization of its nuclear deterrent and the strengthening of collective defense mechanisms within the NATO framework. The presence of such high-level strategic assets in European waters serves as a clear signal of readiness and security assurance to regional partners.

The Ohio-class submarines are designed for extended strategic deterrent patrols. These vessels are nearly undetectable while submerged, providing the U.S. with a survivable and reliable sea-based nuclear retaliatory capability. The 6th Fleet, headquartered in Naples, Italy, conducts the full range of joint and naval operations, often in concert with allied and interagency partners, to advance U.S. national interests and security and stability in Europe and Africa.
