Approximately 80% of Ukraine's territory remains without air defense systems capable of intercepting ballistic missiles, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the President clarified his previous statements regarding air defense needs, noting they were intended to highlight the reality of the situation rather than criticize international partners.
“I will not disclose the specific locations of our Patriot systems. However, 80% of our country lacks such anti-ballistic missile defenses,” Zelenskyy stated. He emphasized that Kyiv continues to seek opportunities to strengthen its defense, collaborating with partners to secure financing for new acquisitions even when immediate transfers are not possible. "Even if they do not provide the systems directly, we have found the funds for them together with our partners," he added.
The President noted that he has personally held negotiations with representatives from Germany, Norway, Northern European countries, and Canada. He highlighted the significant financial burden of these technologies, stating that each system costs between $1.5 billion and $2 billion, with individual missiles costing between $2 and $3 million. Zelenskyy confirmed his readiness to allocate additional funds for these strategic defense purposes.
The Patriot (Phased Array Tracking Radar for Intercept on Target) is a surface-to-air missile defense system used by the United States and several allied nations. It is considered one of the most advanced air defense systems in the world, capable of engaging aircraft, cruise missiles, and tactical ballistic missiles. As the conflict continues, Ukraine has repeatedly called on European nations to combine technological efforts to develop new countermeasures against ballistic threats to ensure regional security.
