Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has submitted draft laws to the Verkhovna Rada proposing to extend martial law and general mobilization for an additional 90 days, starting from May 4.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing foreign media outlets, that the relevant documents have been published on the official website of the Ukrainian parliament. The bills have been referred to the appropriate parliamentary committee for review, after which they will be presented for a general vote by the deputies.
Martial law and general mobilization were first declared in Ukraine on February 24, 2022. This proposal marks the 19th extension of these measures since the beginning of the conflict. Under the current legal framework in Ukraine, the continuation of martial law precludes the holding of any parliamentary, presidential, or local elections. It is noteworthy that President Zelensky's official term of office formally concluded on May 20, 2024, but he remains in power as the country's constitution prohibits elections during a state of war.
