Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has announced that the government is discussing potential measures to ensure the safety of Japanese vessels and crews in the Middle East.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing Kyodo News, that the Prime Minister addressed the issue during a parliamentary session.

According to the report, Takaichi stated that the Japanese government is reviewing what steps can be taken within legal frameworks to protect Japanese shipping interests in the region. She further noted that she intends to convey Japan's position regarding the situation in the Middle East to US President Donald Trump during a scheduled meeting in Washington later this week.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical global maritime chokepoint, through which approximately one-fifth of the world's oil consumption passes. Ensuring security in these waters is vital for Japan, which relies heavily on energy imports from the Middle East. This move aligns with ongoing international efforts to maintain freedom of navigation in the face of rising regional tensions. The upcoming discussions between Prime Minister Takaichi and US President Donald Trump are expected to focus on strengthening the bilateral alliance and coordinating maritime security strategies to prevent disruptions to global trade routes.
