Turkish law enforcement authorities have detained 162 individuals for spreading provocative content on social media regarding recent attacks on educational institutions.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing BBC, that the operations were launched following incidents in the cities of Siverek and Kahramanmaras. The detainees are accused of disseminating footage of the attacks, sharing content designed to incite public fear, praising criminals, and spreading misinformation.
Turkey's Justice Minister Akin Gurlek stated that 95 individuals were initially taken into custody due to concerns over online posts following the school attacks. An additional 67 people were arrested on charges of distributing messages regarding the preparation of further attacks on other schools. Furthermore, judicial authorities have imposed restrictions on 1,104 social media accounts identified as sources of illegal content.
These enforcement actions come amid heightened security measures in Turkey to protect educational facilities and maintain public order. Turkish authorities have recently increased monitoring of digital platforms to combat the spread of disinformation and prevent the glorification of violence. The Ministry of Justice emphasized that legal measures will continue to be strictly applied against those who use social media to threaten national security or public safety.
