Severe flooding in Nepal's mountainous Rasuwa district and surrounding areas has resulted in significant destruction and loss of life. The disaster has caused widespread damage to infrastructure and residential settlements along the Bhotekoshi River.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, citing reports from The Kathmandu Post, the death toll from the natural disaster has reached 55. Authorities report that the fate of 384 individuals remains unknown. Among the missing are Nepalese citizens, as well as tourists from India, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Malaysia.
Reports indicate that many of the missing were pilgrims traveling to the Kailash Mansarovar region in China's Tibet Autonomous Region. Additionally, communication has been lost with 32 security personnel, 60 workers at a newly constructed hydroelectric power plant, and 15 employees at the Timure customs checkpoint.
Search and rescue operations are currently being conducted by the Nepalese army, supported by private helicopters. However, adverse weather conditions are severely hampering these efforts. Experts are investigating the causes of the flash floods, with the bursting of a nearby glacial lake cited as a primary hypothesis.
The disaster has also prompted concern in neighboring China. According to Xinhua, Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered intensified search and rescue operations after the floods reached the Gyirong border crossing in the Tibet Autonomous Region. The Chinese leader has also issued directives for the evacuation of local residents and the provision of medical assistance to the injured.
Nepal, a nation characterized by its rugged Himalayan terrain, is frequently susceptible to natural disasters, including landslides and flash floods, particularly during the monsoon season. The country's geography, while a major tourism draw, presents significant logistical challenges for disaster response and emergency management, often requiring international cooperation during large-scale crises.
