Heavy rains brought by Storm Chandra have flooded dozens of homes and businesses across Ireland, causing significant disruption to infrastructure and daily life.

The Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing The Irish Times, that Dublin has emerged as one of the hardest-hit areas. Several rivers in the eastern and southeastern regions of the country have burst their banks, with some locations recording up to half of their average monthly rainfall in a single day.

The extreme weather conditions have resulted in severe delays and cancellations across air and rail transport networks. Emergency services remain on high alert as meteorologists and experts warn that the risk of further flooding will persist through the end of the week. Local authorities are currently assessing the extent of the damage to residential and commercial properties.

According to reports, a primary factor exacerbating the disaster is the lack of adequate flood prevention infrastructure in the affected zones. Specifically, the situation was worsened by the delay of a 51-million-euro project intended for river dredging and the construction of protective barriers along one of the rivers that overflowed during the storm. This incident highlights growing concerns regarding climate resilience and the necessity for upgraded drainage systems in urban centers to mitigate the impact of increasingly frequent Atlantic storms.
