Iran has executed a citizen convicted of collaborating with Israel's Mossad intelligence agency, marking the latest in a series of capital punishments related to espionage and national security charges.
According to Operative Information Center-OMM, citing Reuters and the Tasnim news agency, the individual, identified as Arfan Kiani, was found guilty of working for Mossad and participating in acts of vandalism and violence during recent nationwide protests. Iranian authorities stated that Kiani was involved in arson, property destruction, and inciting public panic in the city of Isfahan. He was also charged with the use of cold weapons. The death sentence was carried out after being officially upheld by the Supreme Court of Iran.
Relations between Iran and Israel remain at a historical low, with Tehran frequently accusing its regional rival of conducting covert operations, assassinations, and cyberattacks on its soil. This execution comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, where both nations have engaged in a long-standing shadow war involving maritime incidents and intelligence warfare. Iran has recently intensified its crackdown on individuals suspected of foreign intelligence links following domestic unrest and various sabotage attempts at its strategic military and nuclear facilities.
